PRESS RELEASE

Hosts share advice for welcoming refugees

May 4, 2022 5:04 pm

Refugees at Home has drawn up guidance and advice for those planning to open their homes to refugees, based on feedback from some of the charity’s most experienced hosts.

The guidance includes things to consider before signing up to host, tips on getting your house ready, how to welcome guests, and some dos and don’ts of hosting.

Lauren Scott, Executive Director of Refugees at Home, said: “Our wonderful hosts have been welcoming refugees and asylum seekers from over 75 countries into their homes since 2015.

“Opening your door to a stranger is a huge step and a major commitment. We hope that this guidance, based on years of experience, will help anyone considering hosting for the first time.

“People fleeing war and persecution – in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria or elsewhere – are vulnerable and may have complex needs. We would urge those seeking a room, and those offering to provide one, to work through an established charity such as ours so that we can provide the support and advice that both parties will need if the placement is to be a success.”

The guidance is available online:  Click here.
